Right ventricular overload, in contrast to RVH, is not readily detected by ECG and is indistinguishable from normal variants.

ECG diagnosis of PE has poor diagnostic accuracy.

  • Sinus tachycardia
  • Incomplete RBBB
  • SI / QIII/ INVERTED TIII OR SI / rSr’III / INVERTED-TIII TYPE

ECG is still useful when evaluating patients with possible PE, because the results can be used to:

  • Rule out acute MI
  • Evaluate the patient for arrhythmias that may have caused thrombus formation
  • Assess for reversion of ECG changes following treatment
