Responders can offer a select number of family members the chance to be present at the time of resuscitation, provided this will not interfere with resuscitation efforts and the patient does not object to it. Generally, family members do not ask for this unless health care providers offer the service. If a family member is present, ensure that there is an advocate who can be with the family member to answer questions and provide comfort.
Responders must notify family members of the patient’s death expeditiously. This should be done sensitively, being respectful of the religious beliefs and culture that can affect attitudes about death.
