Introduction

Defibrillation is a technique that has been used for over 50 years. Today, defibrillation is widespread, and automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are located in emergency departments and vehicles, as well as many public spaces. These devices often provide auditory instructions during their use, allowing them to be used by untrained individuals.

Early defibrillation is critical to effective CPR and is part of an effective chain of survival. Defibrillation with an AED is considered a component of basic life support (BLS). More advanced cardiac electrical treatments, such as cardioversion, pacing, and manual defibrillation, are components of advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). Defibrillation should be integrated with effective chest compressions to increase the rate of patient survival.
