Complications of Chest Compressions

Chest compressions that are too forceful can inflict trauma on the underlying organs and fracture the ribs. Pressure applied to the xiphoid process can potentially lacerate the liver. To avoid trauma, the compressor applies direct downward pressure, compressing only the lower one-third of the sternum at a depth of one-third the anterior-posterior diameter of the baby’s chest.
