Decreased Respiratory Function in the Newborn

Hypoxia, acidosis, structural brain abnormalities, and muscular dystrophies may cause a decreased respiratory function in the newborn. Narcotics and magnesium sulfate are also likely causes of respiratory depression in the newborn. Respiratory support is the primary intervention until the underlying cause can be identified and corrected.

The baby should be transferred to an institution with the expertise to handle these conditions. Further evaluation and management should occur in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). In the meantime, the team should monitor the neonate closely.
