At times, a newborn baby deteriorates while in the postpartum unit with the mother. The principles of resuscitation are the same whether resuscitating a baby in the delivery room or postpartum area. The facility and resuscitation team must plan for this scenario. All of the necessary equipment must be ready for urgent transport to the newborn patient in distress.
The risk of a fall and other injuries is high if team members and their equipment collide with a person, equipment, or a physical obstacle, such as a bed or door. To avoid the team’s need to scoop-and-run, the facility must supply the maternity ward with the required equipment for resuscitation. Any area where a newborn is roomed should have equipment that can be used for urgent PPV until the resuscitation team arrives. All clinicians who work in areas where newborns are kept must be trained to deliver PPV to a neonate.
The team should plan and practice for these kinds of scenarios. Frequent feedback is necessary for continuous quality improvement of the resuscitation team.
