Informing the Parents of the High-Risk of Mortality

The attending physician must divulge all information to the parents of a dying newborn in clear terms. The attending physician should ask the parents for the baby’s name and refer to the newborn by their first name if the parents have already chosen one. The attending must explain that their baby has received appropriate treatments and that, after a comprehensive assessment, the baby is deteriorating.

The parents may wish to list their baby for organ donation. The healthcare providers must consult with their organ procurement agency if the parents are interested in organ donation.
