Depressed Respiratory Effort Secondary to Narcotics

Maternal narcotic administration decreases the newborn’s respiratory drive. PPV via mask may be needed at this high-risk birth. If the baby has prolonged apnea, intubation is warranted.

The administration of naloxone is not a routinely recommended practice because there is little evidence regarding its pharmacologic effects on the newborn. The clinician should be aware that naloxone administration may cause seizures, edema, and cardiac arrest.
