Therapeutic hypothermia is an intervention for term newborns ≥ 36 weeks gestation after resuscitation. It has been shown to reduce the risk of death and improve neurologic outcomes in term newborns with HIE.

The attending physician may opt to refer the patient to the closest institution with the competency and capability of providing therapeutic hypothermia. The immediate transfer is necessary to meet the therapeutic window. Healthcare providers must also prevent hyperthermia while awaiting transport.
