Indications for an Alternative Airway

An alternative airway is recommended when:

  • PPV delivery via bag-mask fails to improve HR or breathing.
  • An alternative airway is recommended before chest compressions are initiated.
  • Tracheal suctioning of meconium or other thick secretions is needed. 
  • Surfactant replacement therapy is needed. 
  • The baby has a congenital condition known as a diaphragmatic hernia.
