The Initial Steps of the Neonatal Resuscitation Algorithm

This section emphasizes the necessary interventions for a newly born who has labored breathing and persistent cyanosis but is not apneic or bradycardic. The initial steps in neonatal resuscitation are the same for all newly born infants: warming, drying, stimulating, positioning the head and suctioning out the secretions (if needed).

Umbilical cord management occurs at the birth of all babies, just before the initial steps of resuscitation.
