Relief of Choking in an Unresponsive Child or Adult

To clear the airway on an unconscious person, the rescuer should lower the patient to their back onto the floor with the patient’s arms placed at the sides. Attempts to clear the airway are made only if the obstruction is visible. If the blockage can be released by using a finger, the rescuer removes the visible foreign material. Rescuers SHOULD NOT SWEEP BLINDLY as this may push the foreign object further into the windpipe.

  1. The rescuer yells for help or sends a bystander to get help.
  2. The patient is placed flat on their back on the ground.
  3. The rescuer begins chest compressions and gives 30 without interruption. This action may help to dislodge the foreign body.
  4. The patient’s mouth is checked before giving breaths. If a foreign object can be visualized and reached, it should be removed.
  5. CPR is continued. After 5 cycles of compressions, the rescuer calls to activate EMS if another bystander has not already done so.
