CPR Techniques – Treating an Unconscious Choking Adult Video

ACLS Certification Association videos have been peer-reviewed for medical accuracy by the ACA medical review board.

Video at a Glance

  • If someone choking becomes unresponsive, the provider should lower them to the ground and alert EMS.
  • The provider should begin chest compressions, just like in regular CPR.
  • Next, the provider should tilt the head and chin and look inside the mouth for a foreign object.
  • If the object is not visible, do not perform a blind finger sweep. Deliver two rescue breaths. If there is no chest rise, try again. If the second breath doesn’t go in, go back to chest compressions.
  • Perform 30 more chest compressions and check the mouth again. If the object is visible, use your fingers to sweep it out. Then deliver two rescue breaths.
