It is a goal that each BLS student will practice performing the different roles and take the opportunity to become a leader in a simulated high-performance team. For the community provider, tasks include compressions, rescue breathing, and AED use.
There are six suggested roles for a full resuscitation team in the hospital setting. A team’s functions are the compressor, monitor/defibrillator, airway, medications, timer, and team leader. The IHCA team members should only perform those roles for which they are skilled.
Positions for a Six-Person High-Performance Team
The leader is responsible for organizing the group and assigning roles to members. The leader stands in an area where they can view all team members. The leader monitors each member and the team’s performance as a whole and makes sure members work harmoniously with one another. This person is ready to provide backup if a team member falters or a role goes unfilled. The leader influences the team’s morale and exemplifies the highest quality of resuscitative care and behavior.
BLS guidelines assume that each team member is proficient in their assigned role. Each member knows every position’s duties and responsibilities. Team members must practice consistently and show commitment to the high-performance team’s success.
