The most common causes of cardiac arrest in an adult are ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. The automated external defibrillator (AED) is the most effective treatment for cardiac arrest patients with these two rhythms. It analyzes the heart rhythm and advises a shock only when appropriate.
The AED is safe for anyone to use since it provides specific verbal instructions and will not allow a mistake to be made. Once an AED is available, rescuers must immediately apply it to the patient, allow the machine to assess the cardiac rhythm, and give a shock, if indicated. Providing high-quality CPR and defibrillation are the two most important interventions for adult resuscitation.
