Chapter 9: Systematic Approach to ECG Interpretation
This section introduces a systematic approach to ECG interpretation. The system provided is standard worldwide and aims to eliminate errors and ensure a comprehensive and accurate ECG diagnosis.
The systematic approach to the interpretation of ECG includes:
Rhythm analysis
Morphologic description of the P wave, QRS complex, ST segment, and T or U waves. This step also includes the PR interval, which is actually a misnomer. The correct term is the PQ-interval, and for all intents and purposes, this text will use this terminology. In practice, however, it is important to use the standardized format of each institution to prevent miscommunication. Another important measurement in this step is the QT (QTc)-interval.
Definitive ECG diagnosis
Note: This section assumes the student has knowledge of the fundamentals of arrhythmia interpretation.
