Chapter 30: Premature Ventricular Contractions

Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) originate from impulses coming from the ventricles. They are common and may occur in healthy patients without any structural heart diseases. They can also manifest in patients diagnosed with cardiac disease, independent of the magnitude of the disease. Of the healthy patients who undergo 24-hour Holter monitoring, 60% exhibit PVCs, which are mostly singletons and monomorphic (one form). The frequency does not exceed 100 per hour.

Up to 90% of patients with heart disease who undergo 24-hour Holter monitoring exhibit PVCs. In patients with heart disease, the recordings typically display both monomorphic and polymorphic beats.
