Introduction

If a patient is choking, the condition may deteriorate into respiratory arrest and cardiac arrest. Early and proper intervention can prevent this series of events. The appropriate intervention depends on the patient’s age and the severity of the airway obstruction. If the patient is still able to talk and cough, the rescuer should not intervene but continue to monitor.
