Elements of an Effective Team

Designating Duties and Responsibilities

A resuscitation team member is assigned a role and responsibility using priority-based multiple rescuer protocols. Their skills must fit that role. There may not always be a 6-person high-performance team; hence, the team leader must prioritize tasks based on their importance and available resources. The team leader knows how to delegate responsibilities appropriately and understands each team member’s capabilities and limitations.

Constructive Interventions

The team leader will stop another team member’s inappropriate actions as necessary to prevent harm to a patient. The team leader then provides constructive advice in an encouraging manner. For example, the team leader might demonstrate how to perform the task more effectively.

Team members must be proactive in suggesting any changes they feel might be needed in a given situation, e.g., altering a drug or dose. Everyone must be alert to any member’s potential mistakes and immediately address the action.
