Electrophysiology – Innervation of the Heart

The autonomic nervous system works to regulate the heart and includes the sympathetic branch and the parasympathetic branch. These two branches oppose each other. The sympathetic branch influences the atria and ventricles to increase the rate. The parasympathetic branch counteracts the sympathetic branch by decreasing the heart rate, the conduction velocity through the AV node, and the heart’s irritability.
