Post Exposure Procedure

When exposed to a biohazard material, the healthcare provider should take the following steps:

  1. Remove gloves if wearing them.
  2. Wash hands immediately, using the appropriate technique.
  3. Thoroughly wash the affected area with soap and water. If the eyes or other areas were exposed, they must be irrigated with water or normal saline for 20 minutes. Most workplaces will have eyewash stations for use in the case of eye exposure.
  4. Dispose of contaminated items in a biohazard container.
  5. Report the incident to a supervisor as soon as possible.
  6. Contact EMS for any emergency. If the situation is not urgent, an appointment should be made with a physician or the workplace’s employee health resources for treatment recommendations.
  7. The incident should be documented, indicating the date and time of the exposure, the events leading up to it, and the corrective measures taken. It is recommended to submit this as a written report to the supervisor.
