There are risks in being exposed to elements harboring bloodborne pathogens, and the healthcare provider must know what to do once exposure occurs. Every workplace should have an exposure control plan that outlines all steps to take in any exposure situation. It is important to check with the employer to obtain access to that document. Some workplaces with a higher risk for bloodborne pathogen exposure will have their own annual training and vaccination programs.
In any exposure situation, the rescuer’s first step is to always ensure that the scene is safe for all involved.
