Dealing with Sharps

Sharps include anything that might cut or puncture the skin. These can be objects such as needles, glass, or metal that may have come in contact with blood or other body fluids. Besides needles, other examples of sharps include lancets for fingerstick blood sugar checks, scissors, and glass test tubes or jars.

In the healthcare environment, needles often have protective mechanisms that can be activated to cover them after use. Personnel should always use these protections and never attempt to recap a needle after it has been used.

Sharps should be disposed of in a designated puncture-proof biohazard container.
