Understanding the Neonatal Resuscitation Algorithm Video
ACLS Certification Association videos have been peer-reviewed for medical accuracy by the ACA medical review board.
Video at a Glance
- This video explains the 2021 neonatal algorithm.
- Everything begins with a medical team briefing and equipment check.
- One of the most important parts of the algorithm is making sure the baby is breathing and crying. If the baby is breathing and crying, it can be given to the mom, and the algorithm ends. This represents 90% of births.
- If the baby is not breathing or crying, start with the initial steps. Then, bag the baby.
- If the breathing is labored, position the airway and suction if needed.
- If the baby is still not breathing after these steps, hook them up to a heart rate monitor. If resuscitation is going well, there will be a steady rise in the heart rate. Utilize the MR. SOPA pneumonic.
- If the heart rate gets to 60, it’s time to tube the baby. If the heart rate remains under 60, start chest compressions and administer epinephrine.
