- This video reviews the three steps of ABG interpretation.
- First, look at the pH to determine if the patient is acidotic or alkalotic.
- Second, look at the CO2 value and determine if the result is primarily respiratory or metabolic.
- Finally, for metabolic acidosis, look at the ion gap to determine if the acidosis is non-gap or gap acidosis.
- Acute and chronic conditions determine compensation.
- If the CO2 is normal, look at the HCO3 level.
