- Aberrant proteins cause oncologic emergencies. These include paraneoplastic syndromes, such as SIADH and hypercalcemia, and problematic hypercoagulable states, such as tissue factor produced by the tumor and mutated cancer cells.
- Mass effect via the growing tumor or fluid secretion also causes oncologic emergencies. Some examples are tamponade, spinal cord compression, and superior vena cava syndrome.
- Some cancer treatment side effects cause oncologic emergencies, the most common being neutropenic fever. Infections from neutropenia are the most common cause of death in cancer patients.
