Mitochondria and Energy Production Video

ACLS Certification Association videos have been peer-reviewed for medical accuracy by the ACA medical review board.

Video at a Glance

  • Mitochondria have two phospholipid bilayer membranes. The outermost contains lots of protein pores that allow charged and large molecules, including glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids, to freely enter the mitochondria.
  • The inner membrane is very tortuous and webs into a matrix inside the mitochondria. Its large surface area is studded with enzymes.
  • The glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids react with the enzymes and create energy.
  • The mitochondria use the energy to convert ADP into ATP.
