Understanding the MR SOPA Mnemonic Video

Video at a Glance

  • Mr. SOPA is a pneumonic for the corrective steps to take when providing positive pressure to a newborn, but it isn’t working.
  • M: Adjust the mask to create a good seal. It’s common for the mask to leak around the nose. If needed, use two hands to create the seal.
  • R: Reposition the head to open the airway. Use a pad behind the shoulders to raise the head.
  • S: Suction the mouth and nose.
  • O: Open the mouth and lift the jaw forward.
  • P: Pressure increase. Increase it by 5-10 cm of water pressure to a maximum of 40 cm on a term baby. On a pre-term baby, don’t go above 30 cm.
  • A: Alternative airway.
