  • Stable angina is caused by an imbalance between oxygen (O2) supply and demand to the myocardium.
  • O2 demand increases in the myocardium when the heart rate and contractility increase. During stable angina, the body’s ability to increase perfusion during increased heart activity is compromised due to atheroma.
  • The body’s inability to keep up with demand results in ischemia, the main symptom of stable angina.
  • Symptoms present when the artery is around 60% occluded.
  • Stable angina progresses slowly, presents stable symptoms, and features a reversible ischemia that doesn’t lead to infarction.
