ACLS Certification Association videos have been peer-reviewed for medical accuracy by the ACA medical review board.

Video at a Glance

  • Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone (SIADH) occurs when the body produces too much Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH).
  • In the presence of ADH, certain water pores within the body open, causing increased osmolarity, which concentrates the urine and decreases ureic output.
  • During SIADH, sodium levels drop to the 120s and 110s.
  • Diabetes Insipidus (DI) is the opposite of SIADH and presents with massive diuresis, which may lead to life-threatening dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
  • There are two types of DI: neurogenic and nephrogenic.
  • DI treatment is exogenous administration of synthetic ADH.
