- Ischemic stroke occurs when a region of the brain is deprived of blood due to a blocked blood vessel.
- Most are caused by an infarct in a blood vessel supplying the brain, usually due to a blood clot.
- Causes of the clots are usually atherosclerosis.
- AF is also associated with stroke.
- During an ischemic stroke, the brain tissue beyond the infarct becomes hypoxic.
- Symptoms include facial muscle weakness, abnormal speech, and one arm weakness.
- Imaging is used to find the location of the stroke and to rule out hemorrhagic stroke.
- Treatment may include thrombolytics, endovascular thrombectomy, anti-platelet medication, physical therapy, and good nutrition.
