  • Hypoxia occurs when there are inadequate levels of oxygen in the tissues of an organ.
  • Cells will die within minutes if totally deprived of oxygen.
  • Symptoms include rapid breathing, shortness of breath, sweating, and a blue tinge of the skin.
  • Hypoxia is measured with a pulse oximeter.
  • Less than 95% oxygenation qualifies as hypoxia. It can also be measured by taking arterial blood gas.
  • Causes of hypoxia include lung issues, blood issues, and cellular issues.
