“Knowledge is power! As health care providers, we are drawn to the medical field out of a desire to care, help, and serve. To do that successfully, we must educate and maintain best practices to treat the whole patient with knowledge, empathy, and compassion.”
– Brandy Weirich, BSN, RN, TNS, LI
Brandy Weirich, BSN, RN, TNS, LI, has always had a love for the lights and sirens associated with ambulances. She took that love and joined the Marengo Rescue Squad at the age of 17 as the youngest member in history. Brandy obtained her Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License and went on to become a Registered Nurse (RN).
Brandy began her nursing career in the cardiac telemetry unit. Ultimately, she found her passion in the emergency department (ED), where the controlled chaos and ability to navigate the patient experience with autonomy, knowledge, and compassion inspired her. Brandy worked in a level 2 ED for over 10 years, while assisting as an adjunct lab instructor in a paramedic program.
Continuing to pursue her passion and love for education and EMS, Brandy became the Lead Instructor for McHenry County College (MCC) in conjunction with Northwestern Medicine (NM) in 2013. Brandy’s teaching style encourages her students to apply the knowledge (not memorize) by utilizing pathophysiology, evidenced-based knowledge, and scaffolding.
Wanting to use her knowledge to provide compassionate care, Brandy took a position at a level 1 trauma center, while continuing to teach full-time. The experience was profound, and she used it as an amazing learning opportunity during the COVID pandemic. Brandy continues to lead, educate, and promote high standards of learning in and out of the classroom.
