Cognitive Load Theory Video

ACLS Certification Association videos have been peer-reviewed for medical accuracy by the ACA medical review board.

Video at a Glance

  • There are three types of cognitive loads: intrinsic, extraneous, and germane.
  • Intrinsic load is related to the complexity of information a person is processing.
  • Extraneous load is a load on the working memory, completely unrelated to the task at hand, which creates distraction, such as a dog walking in front of one’s screen while e-learning.
  • Germane load is the mental processing effort that directly supports schema development in long-term memory and requires activities such as scaffolding, sequencing, and rehearsing.
  • A teacher’s goal is to minimize intrinsic and extraneous load while maximizing germane load.
