Care of the Patient with a Shockable Rhythm Video

ACLS Certification Association videos have been peer-reviewed for medical accuracy by the ACA medical review board.

Video at a Glance

  • Some patients in a shockable rhythm will require components of BLS, ACLS, and post-cardiac
    arrest care.
  • With manual defibrillators, CPR can be performed right up until it is time to deliver a shock. At that time, the patient, the stretcher, and the equipment must be cleared before shocking the patient.
  • Ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia are lethal rhythms requiring defibrillation as soon as possible after arrest.
  • In ACLS, drugs may be given via four routes: intravenously, intraosseously, through a central line, or via an endotracheal tube if the patient is intubated.
