- There are three different types of opioid receptors, and they occur on the pre and postsynaptic membrane.
- Opioid receptors are present throughout the brain, spinal cord, and enteric nervous system, and they’re highly expressed in the brain’s reinforcement centers.
- Opioids cause euphoria, analgesia, pupillary constriction, respiratory depression, nausea, and vomiting. They also decrease the seizure threshold, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate/depth, and motility.
- Different opioids have different onset and offset times, and Narcan is an opioid antagonist.
