Video at a Glance
- The meninges are a space between the skull and cerebral cortex comprised of three layers of connective tissue connecting the brain to the skull.
- The first layer is the pia mater, and it’s fused directly to the brain. It contains spaces that allow for blood vessel penetration.
- The second layer is the arachnoid, which contains arteries and veins with space between them called the subarachnoid space.
- The outside layer is the dura mater, and it’s fused to the arachnoid and periosteum of the skull.
- Meninges also surround the spinal cord, although the dura mater of the spinal cord is not fused to the periosteum of the vertebrate.
