  • Normally, veins are lined with endothelial cells, and blood flows between, while a set of three polymers – prostacyclin, thrombomodulin, and heparin – prevent thrombi from forming.
  • For a thrombus to form, there must be some combination of damage to the vessel, venostasis, and a present hypercoagulable condition.
  • Stasis may be caused by poor venous flow or bed rest. Vessel damage may be caused by smoking. Hypercoagulability may be caused by inflammatory conditions, sepsis, autoimmune disorders, major surgery, or genetic factors.
  • Thromboembolic disorders typically present in the lower extremities.
