Hypertensive Medications for Stroke Video

Video at a Glance

  • In the absence of hemorrhagic stroke, if the patient is hypertensive, consider cardene or labetalol.
  • Labetalol is an alpha and beta-blocker and an alpha and beta antagonist.
  • Labetalol dosage is 10–20mg over 1–2 minutes and may repeat in 15 minutes.
  • Cardene is a calcium channel blocker.
  • Infuse at 5–15mg/hr titrated to the patient’s blood pressure at 2.5 mg per titration.
  • Do not give labetalol to an asthmatic.
