“My passion is simplifying complex topics for students. I find a great deal of meaning and joy in researching various science topics in-depth and then finding a way to paint those details into a big picture lesson that makes sense to students and empowers them to become confident learners.”
– Susanna Heinze, M.S. Physiology
Teaching has been Susanna Heinze’s passion for over 20 years. She began her career educating middle school students in Durham, North Carolina, and loved it so much that she started teaching evenings at Durham Tech Community College. After Susanna and her husband moved to Washington state, she became a high school instructor before pivoting to community college teaching at Skagit Valley College.
In recent years, she adopted PBL (Problem-Based Learning), preferred by many medical schools and law programs, as a way to bring clinical applications and integration of concepts to the forefront of student learning. With this approach, students are placed in teams and work through clinical case studies as their primary curriculum.
Susanna has truly enjoyed instructing all ages, and she has learned so much from the diversity of students. Her goal is to simplify physiology concepts for health students, in particular pre-nursing and nursing students. Susanna took a Certified Nursing Assistant course, which culminated in a week working in a nursing home to further understand the demands of her pre-nursing students and to make her teaching as applicable as possible. As her students increasingly sought help in preparing for the TEAS exam to gain entry to nursing school, Susanna designed and began offering a TEAS prep class at her community college. She recently took the TEAS test to provide her students the best possible preparatory advice.
She served as Division Chair for Sciences for several years and then happily returned full-time to the classroom. In 2010, to provide additional support for her students, she began a YouTube channel, which has grown gradually over the years. In 2019, she expanded to hosting a website so that learners can find all the topics they need in one place. The opportunity to work with ACLS Certification Association is an exciting step forward in her commitment to providing high-quality online learning.
