ACLS Certification Association videos have been peer-reviewed for medical accuracy by the ACA medical review board.

Video at a Glance

  • Parkinson disease presents with four symptoms.
  • The first symptom is tremors at rest, the second is muscle rigidity, the third is bradykinesia, and the fourth is general gait disturbances.
  • Primary Parkinson disease is caused by Lewy body dementia, while secondary causes are pugilistic, medications, or brain lesions.
  • The substantia nigra section of the brain contains a red nucleus that produces dopamine for the basal ganglia, the area of the brain responsible for motor function.
  • In Lewy body dementia, the neurons in the red nucleus develop protein build-ups that negatively affect dopamine production needed to inhibit the motor system, causing muscle contraction and other associated Parkinson symptoms.
