  • During cardiac tamponade, fluid collects between the visceral and parietal pericardium.
  • Tamponade development consists of fluid diffusion and how quickly the fluid accumulates.
  • Beck’s triad lists the symptoms for tamponade, including hypotension, jugular venous distension, and muffled heart sounds.
  • Pulsus paradox may also present during cardiac tamponade.
  • If cardiac tamponade is suspected, a rescuer should order an emergency ECG to evaluate.
  • Tamponade treatment includes either pericardiocentesis through a sub-xiphoid approach or a pericardial window. After treatment, fluid typically doesn’t re-accumulate.
