  • The liver is broken up into hexagonal functional units that form a honeycomb shape.
  • Each unit is made up of various cells, including reticuloendothelial cells, Kupfer cells, stellate cells, cholangiocytes, and hepatocytes.
  • Outside each functional unit is a portal vein and hepatic artery, which circulate oxygen through the unit’s center.
  • Outside the fenestrated cells is the space of Disse followed by a row of hepatocytes and bile canaliculus.
  • Kupfer cells line the sinusoids and engulf enteric bacteria.
  • Stellate cells are star-shaped cells in the space of Disse, which store vitamin A.
