ACLS/BLS Preparation

Key Learning Points

ECG Waves P, Q, R, S, T

Vector Direction and Size Page 4

  • The QRS complex represents right and left ventricular depolarization.
  • The Q wave is the first negative deflection following the P wave.
  • The R wave is the first positive deflection following the P wave.
  • The S wave is the first negative deflection following the R wave.

Q Wave Page 5

  • Septal Q waves are normal and are produced from depolarization of the top part of the septum(a).
  • Q waves are the normal in certain ECG leads but can also be a product of dead or dying cardiac tissue.
